Green Spotlight on Organic Cotton: Our Planet, Your Health
There are huge benefits to making the change from purchasing products made from conventional cotton to products made from
organic cotton- whether that change is in buying organic cotton clothing, organic cotton adult bedding,
organic baby bedding or clothing, organic cotton towels or other
organic baby products.
The image of conventional cotton as being “all natural” is very misleading. In fact, each year billions of pounds of synthetic fertilizers and toxic insecticides and pesticides are used to grow conventional cotton which accounts for about half of the entire world’s fiber needs. If you break it down, when manufactured conventionally, it takes approximately one-third of a pound of chemicals to produce enough cotton to make just one T-shirt!
The chemicals used to grow conventional cotton can make the farmers who are exposed to them sick. These chemicals also make their way into our food chain through the cottonseed oil used in food (including many snack foods), through the cottonseed used to feed beef and dairy cattle and into the groundwater that so many people and animals drink.
In addition, once the cotton is grown, a whole host of toxic chemicals are used in the textile production and finishing process. These also make their way into our environment including our own living environment where the chemicals used can “off-gas”from the product and be inhaled by the people around it.
Organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown without the use of these toxic chemicals. Instead, crops are managed and protected using natural predators against pests. An added advantage to this is that, without the chemical treatments, the plants grow healthier and stronger.
Because manufacturers of organic cotton products typically have a greater respect for the environment, they also tend to make a greater effort to manufacture their products in a manner that has as little impact on the environment as possible. For example, gentle hydrogen-peroxide can be used for whitening instead of bleach (which is a harmful substance) and low-impact dyes made from things like vegetables, clays and minerals can be used for colors instead of heavy-metal dyes.
